Battle System

If you ever played Final Fantasy VII, the battle system in Final Fantasy IX shouldn't be a problem for you. Final Fantasy IX returns with the classic ATB, or Active Time Battle, battle system. This means that you have to wait until the ATB bar to fill up to make an action. Keep in mind that that enemies you fight also have an ATB bar. Something different in the battle system is that there are four characters instead of three and each of the characters have specific abilities that other characters can't do. For example, only Zidane can steal items and only Vivi can cast Black Magic.

» Wait & Active Modes

There are two different ATB modes in Final Fantasy IX. For people not used to the classic ATB battle system, "Wait" would be the best option to choose. With "Wait" mode, players have unlimited time to choose their actions and enemies have to wait to attack you until you have chosen your action. This option is best for beginners, but veterans will find battles slower and unexciting. Now, for all you veterans out there, the ATB battle system should be familar to you. And as such, most of you will want to have your mode on "Active". This mode means that even when you're making selections, enemies can attack when they're ready too. "Active" mode makes battle more exciting for those who are used to the system, but beginners will probably be overwhelmed.

Battle System Tips:

+ Keep weaker characters in the back row so they can take less damage.
+ Beginners of FF9 should make sure the ATB style is on 'Wait' mode.
+ If you want a stronger character to attack, press the Triangle button to switch turns.
+ If you feel that you can't win the battle, escape (L1 and R1 buttons held down) if needed.
+ There may be targeting issues, so press the L2 button to target by name.
+ If you need help, press the SELECT button.
+ Don't always run away. You made need EXP and Gil for future events.
+ Steal as often as you can. Enemies can have some useful items.
