Trance

In Final Fantasy IX, when a character reaches Trance (this is when the character begins to glow), they gain new abilities. This is similar to Limit Breaks in the pervious Final Fantasy games, but with some differences. One huge difference that is probably noted is that when your character goes into Trance, you have to use it. This means that if you go trance during a normal battle, you'd have to use it regardless if you don't want too.

Because of this, many players hated the Trance system because they couldn't use them for upcoming bosses. Another difference is that some Trance techniques will actaully reduce your MP. Though it doesn't seem like a big deal, for certain characters it makes a huge difference. However, remember that these techniques are very powerful.

Something that I really liked is that whenver you use Trance techniques, your Trance bar doesn't go back empty. As you use them, your Trance bar empities little by little. This was very helpful in boss battles and added more strategy.

Trance also sometimes replaced the character's normal techniques with new Trance commands. For example, when Vivi goes into Trance, he gains the 'Blk Magx2' command. Trance will become helpful to you in all sorts of ways. Before I forget, to make your Trance bar go up, enemies have to hit your characters. Just like old times eh?
